New Kids and the bad can

I remember the summer of 1990 because the clutch was going out on my Sunbird and I wasn't going to replace it until the thing went completely out. My girlfriend at the time (what was her name) was not pleased by the odor.

I also remember that this girl was a big New Kids On The Block fan. I was forced to go out and buy up every 12-pack of Coca Cola Magic Cans, that promised great prizes. They ended up having a bit of trouble with that promotion. Read the news story here.

Of course you couldn't go anywhere that year without being blasted with NKOTB marketing. That haunting memory didn't deter my by throwing on "Step By Step" as the 9@9 looks at 1990 Friday, May 15th @ 9am.

Dom DeLuise R.I.P.

We interrupt Swine-Flu mania to bring you sad news. Dom Deluise has died at 75. I would like to share one of my favorite memories of him with you.

 My dad and I saw Cannonball Run at Cherry Vale Theatres (they still haven't done anything with the building).The movie was okay, but the best part was the outake reel, featuring Dom's infectous laughter:

Hononegah Indians Sweep Titans In Regional Play

The Hononegah Indians won last nights Regional game at Guilford ,61-51 in overtime,for the third time this season, to advance to play the winner of tonight's match-up between Jefferson and Auburn,this Friday night for the Regional championship at 7:30pm.The Titans ,with the game tied at 45 ,with 12 seconds left in regulation play,were unable to get a shot off until 1 second left,in what was a desperation shot from about 18 feet, that  missed everything.The Indians went on a 7-0 run in overtime,thanks to the offensive shooting of Matt Carroll who hit a three,a lay up and a freethrow in the early stages of the overtime quarter.The Titans in the fourth quarter,again were only able to manage 3 baskets from the field,due to the pressure defense of the Indians.Tonight's game will feature Jefferson vs Auburn,at Guilford at 7:30,gates open at 6:00pm.

 The Oscars were actually watchable (is that a word?)this year. There was the Slum Dog story. Heath Ledger won best supporting actor and the Oscar will go to his daughter.

The highlight for me was the reference to Chicago's own Styx... Dennis DeYoung had to be proud.

Hard Luck Woman

 

Many of my friends cite "Beth" as their favorite Kiss song sung by Peter Criss, I beg to differ. Sure, the fact that he, "and the boys have been playin'", and they just can't find the song creates some good romantic tension.

It's the kind of tension that happens when I leave whatever girlfriend I have at the time to travel to a good mega-record swap in a city far far away. I wouldn't want her going with me, just like the band wouldn't allow girlfriends distracting their art. Plus they'd all end up going home with Gene Simmons, but I digress.

"Hard Luck Woman" is my favorite Kiss-Criss song because my friend Chris was convinced Rod Stewart was singing it. According to Wikipedia (who usually get it right,right?) the song was written for Rod The Mod, but he thumbed his nose at it.

Nonetheless, I won five bucks on that bet, which could buy you a lot in 1977. Maybe even a Kiss poster from CO-OP records.

Don't Know What You've Got...

('til it's gone)

I remember hearing Cinderella for the first time. I thought, "Wow...Frank Oz, the voice of Grover on Sesame Street singing in a hair band"! Tom Kiefer's voice really cut through the mix.

For me, a good song evokes some kind of memory. I remember slow-dancing to"Don't Know What You've Got ('til it's gone)" one Saturday Night at Reflections at Main and Auburn. The other participant of the dance, her name was either Shelly or Kelly...something like that. I had just met her through a friend of a friend of Rick the DJ.

The song started and she gave me that look. Guys, you know "The Look". So next thing I knew I was belly-rubbin' with this gorgeous woman,remembering I was late meeting another young lady over at The North Main Tap. I had considered walking across the street and then going back and forth all night like some Three's Company episode, but instead asked for her number and moved on. 

That song and that girl was on my mind the rest of the night. Three days later I gained the courage to call her. It's not that I was afraid to call a woman on the phone; I just didn't remember her exact name. That turned out to be okay because the number she gave me was the direct line to the County Morgue. I found out later that she pulled the same thing on a couple of my buddies.

Good girls...

The Knack busted into the scene in pre-MTV 1979 with "My Sharona". It seemed like that song was on Y-95 every 95 minutes, and we didn't seem to mind.

"We" were the gang that used to hang out in the basement of Leon's house after school. Sometimes we'd talk about the girls that wouldn't give us the time of day. Othertimes we'd play Dungeons and Dragons;but usually, somebody would bring the new album they just bought at Disc Records, Appletree or Co-op.  

I think it was Bailey,a guy whose income was derived from returnable Falstaff bottles, who brought in "Get the Knack", ripped off the cellophane, and slapped it on the old BSR turntable. We had heard "My Sharona" already and liked it, but what really gave us all an adolescent giggle was "Good Girls Don't".

The song had some lyrics that, if repeated in the wrong company, would lead to a switchin' or a mouth washed out with soap (Editors note: Lava is the worst and will take the enamel off your teeth). By the time the song got on Top 40 radio, the lyrics were all squeaky-clean. We called the dorky DJand complained.In a fake voice he said it was out of his hands and offered us a free t-shirt if we'd go on the air with him and say his station was our favorite and that we were partying with ___ (Insert fake radio name)___.

Tryin' To Live My Life...

 

"I smoked five packs of cigarettes a day. It was the hardest thing to put them away". That's the only words my buddy "Coughy" could remember from the Bob Seger song from 1981.

We called him "Coughy " because of his chronic Post-Nasal Drip. He claimed that his allergic reactions began after accidentally inhaling the purple dust from a Pixie Stick he bought over at The Neighborhood Store on Broadway. 

 

Anyways... Bob recorded the song for the live album "Nine Tonight". It was written by Eugene Williams and originally made popular by soul-singer Otis Clay.

 

Mr. Seger remains one of my top ten favorite Bobs. He came out of a long retirement in '06, went on Letterman,toured, then went back into hiding. He can be heard on a new Little Feat song, Grand Theft Auto IV, and Guitar Hero.

Rubberband Man

It was 1976. "Jiggle TV" began with Charlie's Angels. Another big show for me was What's Happening.I used to irritate my sister by quoting DeWayne Wayne, "Hey-Hey-Hey"!

The song that got me into trouble was "The Rubberband Man" from The Spinners. In school ,I would keep my transistor radio on at a low volume. When that song came on WLS, I would crank the little volume wheel as loud as it would go causing a pleasing distortion from the 2 inch speaker.

That was followed by an impromptu Rubberband fight. My Teacher was not amused. I got my radio back at the end of the school year.

The Spinners began in 1954 and it's latest lineup is still touring today. Rubberband man made it to #2 on the Billboard Pop chart and #1 R&B.
